In 1989, Thom left his popular role of Philip on the number one daytime serial “Young and the Restless” to pursue big screen stardom, but a horrific tragedy occurred when his paranoid schizophrenic brother Troy killed their mother with a baseball bat. His brother is serving life in prison. His other brother Craig, in a deep depression, shot himself in 2000, at which time, Thom decided to come out as a gay man and share his experiences with the world–through his paintings, and through his autobiography “Forgiving Troy”. He now travels the country painting live for various charities. To date he has helped raise over $100,000.00 for non profit organizations through his inspiring art.
In 2004, he came back to “Young and the Restless” as Philip for one episode in a dream sequence. That year, his West Coast Premier was hosted by Scarlett Johansson at the Soicher Marin Fine Art Gallery in Los Angeles. In 2005, he received the “2005 Best Emerging Artist Los Angeles” from Out Magazine. In 2006, he received the “Key to the Light” award from Debbie Reynolds at the 51st Annual Thalians Evenet in Los Angeles. In 2007, he received the “Best Indie Autobiography” for his powerful and inspirational memoir “Forgiving Troy” from USA Book News. Bierdz’s self-published memoirs Forgiving Troy has garnered 9 awards thus far. In 2009, h co-founded www.AmericanArtAwards.com. In 2009, Bierdz made history as the first openly gay actor to be hired in a contract role on a daytime soap opera. In 2011, he moved to scenic Lake Arrowhead where he lives in nature painting portraits.
